Taking steps that help you go greener at home and also save money is a win – win goal. So in this report, my team and I have pulled together a variety of easy, practical tips. Lighting. Incandescent light bulbs lose about 90% of the electricity they use as heat. Replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) and LED bulbs, can reduce your electricity bill. Even though CFL and LED bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, they are more efficient and last longer. To avoid problems, however, you must choose the correct bulb for an application because CFLs and LED lights can burn out quickly when used in the wrong place. For example, a regular CFL “coil” light placed in a can light or an enclosed fixture typically will burn out rather quickly—a waste of your money. Excessive heat can also cause LED lights to burn out. Learn more about CFL and LED lighting at the energystar.gov site.

With the phenomenal success of sites such as MySpace.com and Facebook.com, the numbers and variety of social networking websites are exploding on the Internet. Have you seen one of these ads or one like it? Looks real doesn’t it? Is your Internet browser trying to protect you? When RealityCheck was launched last year, one of the articles looked at three free web-based emailservices: Hotmail, Yahoo!, and Mail.com. With Google’s recent introduction of Gmail, these services have made various changes. This review looks again at Hotmail, Yahoo!, and Mail.com and takes a first look at Gmail.
As usual, the term “free” has a catch. You “pay” for these services not with cash but with your demographic information. RealityCheck tip: Always, always read the privacy policy (and any related privacy policies) when providing personal information. That said, these services can be useful if you need to be able to access your email from any computer. You also must accept cookies in order to use any of these sites.

Do you depend on your computer for work, school or recreation? I literally couldn't function without mine as my work takes me around the country. But the news has been full lately of the latest threats to our computers. For instance, the MyDoom virus and Netsky worm have recently been causing havoc with computer systems around the world. Maybe one of these or another has already hit your machine. Frustrating, isn't it? And these problems will likely get worse not better.

While many articles and even a few books have been written on this subject, this brief article will give you an overview of what steps you can take to secure your computer and the personal information on it.
